Comparing Spa Hair Removal Treatments

Waxing Hair Removal

If you haven’t been to a waxing spa lately, you may be surprised to learn that the sticky, messy honey-based waxes of the past have been replaced with creamy soy waxes.

The lotion adheres only to the hair, not the skin. Strips of are layered over the cream. When it dries, the cloths are pulled off like a bandage taking the hair with it.

On a positive note, hair waxing is the most affordable spa hair removal treatment – ranging from $15 for the upper lip to $75 for a full back wax.

The downside is that waxing can be painful. Waxing results last about four to six weeks.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser Hair Removal uses special frequencies of light energy to penetrate the hair shaft. The pigment in the hair root absorbs light, and the resulting heat actually kills the hair root.

While laser treatments don’t kill the follicle itself, it is difficult or impossible for another hair to grow in its place. So laser hair removal is nearly permanent. Many people choose to have touch-up laser hair removal treatments once a year after the first year.

Laser hair removal only takes about 30 minutes per treatment. Because the hairs grow at different intervals, five to eight treatments may be needed for complete hair removal.

Laser hair removal is a much faster process than electrolysis – because lasers can kill many hair roots at one time. During electrolysis each hair follicle must be individually killed.

Laser hair removal is also a much more comfortable process than waxing or electrolysis. The feel of the laser has been compared to the snap of a rubber band.

We offer two types of laser hair removal. Our Fraxel laser is best for removing or reducing dark hair on lighter skin. We also offer the Nd: YAG laser which is the only laser to which dark, black, and African American skin responds well.

Our laser treatments are very affordable – starting at $45 for small areas and up to $95 for large areas. For just a little more than the cost of waxing, laser treatments offer a more permanent hair removal solution.

Electrolysis Hair Removal

During electrolysis an ultra-slim needle is used to penetrate each individual hair shaft, one by one. Shocks of electricity are delivered into the hair follicle, killing the cells that actually make hair. This makes for permanent, but painstaking, hair removal.

While each electrolysis treatment only takes about 20 minutes – it could take up to a full year of weekly treatments to get rid of all the unwanted hair one at a time. While electrolysis only runs about $50 per treatment, by the time you multiply that by a year of treatments, you could be spending more than $2,500.

Compared to lasers, which only require five to eight treatments, electrolysis is the most expensive spa hair removal treatment. Laser treatments are also more painful than laser treatments – especially in sensitive areas such as the “bikini” line or upper lip.
