Botox – Before & After Treatment Guidelines
More women (and men!) than ever are turning to Botox to treat fine lines and wrinkles. If you’re considering getting Botox, you no doubt have some questions about the procedure. But don’t worry! At Birmingham, MI AMAE Med Spa, board-certified plastic surgeon and Botox expert Dr. Ali has helped hundreds of women achieve their cosmetic goals with Botox.
In this article, we will discuss everything you need to know before getting Botox, what needs to be done after Botox, and everything else necessary to know for a successful Botox procedure.
Before Getting Botox Injections
All of our prospective Botox patients are given a custom list of pre-treatment instructions. While Dr. Ali creates specialized instructions for all of his patients, there are a number of general guidelines that should be followed by anyone about to get Botox.
For two days before getting Botox, patients must abstain from drinking alcohol, as well as from consuming vitamin E or Ginkgo Biloba. During this time, Botox patients should also avoid taking aspirin, as well as anti-inflammatories such as ibuprofen.
What to Expect After Getting Botox Injections
At the end of the Botox procedure, patients are provided with instructions on how to care for their Botox. For best results, it is imperative that Botox patients follow their post-treatment instructions carefully. While the specific needs of each Botox patient will be different, there are a handful of universal guidelines that should be followed by anyone who has recently undergone Botox injections.
After being injected with Botox, patients may notice that the skin surrounding the injection sight has developed some redness. This is not cause for alarm, as it is not an allergic reaction, and is instead a normal component of the healing process.
Botox patients may also notice some minor swelling at the treatment site. This is normal and will subside after 1-2 days. While significantly less common, Botox patients occasionally experience small amounts of bleeding from the injection site, which may result in bruising. This is not cause for alarm and can be treated by applying pressure to the impacted area for fifteen minutes, followed by a few minutes under a cold compress. Never apply ice directly to an area injected with Botox.
What to Do (and Not Do) After Getting Botox Injections
For four hours after their Botox procedure, patients must remain in a vertical (upright) position, without bending over or reclining backwards.
It is highly important that you are careful to NOT massage, rub or scratch the injection site. This can spread or dislocate the Botox from the injected area. Not only can this reduce the effectiveness of the Botox in the intended area, it can also cause unwanted relaxing of the muscles in unintended areas – such as drooping of the eyelids.
For four hours after Botox injections, the muscles of the treatment area must be exercised every three minutes. Our nurse injector will explain how to do this at the end of your appointment.
Botox patients should refrain from heavy exercise or aerobic activity on the day of their treatment. Additionally, activities that cause sweating or perspiration should be avoided the day of Botox injections. This includes hot showers and baths. Botox patients must also not drink alcohol the day of their treatment.
Unless given the go-ahead by board-certified Botox expert Dr. Ali, Botox patients must wait at least two hours (ideally longer) before applying makeup. When sufficient time has passed to apply makeup, Botox patients must do so gently, while refraining from aggressively rubbing the treatment area. This same level of care must also be taken when washing the Botox treatment area, which should not be done until several hours after treatment.
Individuals should also avoid activities that result in high exposure to UV rays -such as sunbathing- until they no longer experience any swelling or redness from their Botox procedure.
Seeing Botox Results
After getting Botox injections, patients must remember to be patient. Noticeable results from Botox injections take approximately 3-7 days to become visible. But by the end of the first week following treatment, Botox patients should be able to see significant improvement to their treatment area.
