Med Spa Microneedling vs. At Home Microneedling
Microneedling is a minimally invasive, extremely effective treatment for fine lines, dark spots (hyperpigmentation), acne scars, and loose facial skin. While microneedling is typically performed in a medical spa, some at-home or “over the counter” microneedling treatments are available. However, at home procedures are much less effective, and are not as safe. Whereas Med Spa Microneedling is substantially more effective and carries less risk of complications when performed by licensed aestheticians in a medical setting.
In this article, we will explain how the differences between at-home microneedling and microneedling performed in our Birmingham, MI medical spa.
At Home Microneedling is Not Safe for Everyone
Everyone’s skin type and circumstances vary drastically and while microneedling treatments are great for most adults and skin types, there are exceptions. This is why a consultation with a licensed medical aesthetician is a necessity in determining if microneedling is right for you.
Microneedling may not be the right choice if you have certain underlying medical conditions including bleeding or scarring disorders, or if you are on certain medications (such as blood thinners). Additionally, flare ups can occur after treatments with certain skin conditions including eczema, rosacea and acne.
These are a few reasons why it’s important to seek out a licensed aesthetician in a Medical Spa instead of attempting to do it yourself. Additionally, a licensed aesthetician has the training to achieve optimum results for you based on your skin and medical history while limiting the chances of infection or damage to your skin.
Med Spa Microneedling Equipment is Different
The tools used at home versus in a Medical Spa can vary drastically. Overall microneedling tools can range from .25mm to 3mm. At home devices contain needles that are 0.25 to .5mm, whereas medical spas can have the tools that penetrate much more deeply. Trained and licensed professionals have the skills to utilize the longer needles which penetrate the skin on a deeper level which leads to skin regeneration on a deeper level for superior, longer lasting results.
Deeper medical grade needles help with product absorption, and deeper microneedling is required to stimulate the natural production of collagen and elastin within the skin. AMAE Med Spa, in Birmingham MI uses the new SkinStylus® MicroSystem for microneedling. It is an FDA approved medical grade device that offers a “fractional” treatment (not available at home) for optimal results.
Only Med Spa Microneedling Includes PRP
During microneedling in our Birmingham, MI med spa, we infuse the patients skin with “Platelet Rich Plasma” (PRP) extracted from the patient’s own blood. The platelets contain growth factors that stimulate production of collagen and elastin within the deeper layers of skin cells.
Since microneedling with PRP requires a blood draw, it can only be performed in a medical setting. Microneedling with the addition of PRP creates a superior treatment that can deliver the most effective skin tightening and resurfacing available.
