FDA Approves CoolSculpting for Double Chin Lax Skin

In 2017, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) issued a study that revealed 73 percent of adults are bothered by excess fat under their chin! That means almost 3/4 of adult the population are frustrated by a “double chin”.

But there’s great news that just crossed the horizon. This past December the FDA announced that the CoolSculpting® treatment is approved to treat both excess fat AND loose or lax skin in the chin area! This makes CoolSculpting the first and only non-surgical fat reduction technology to be FDA-approived for reducing the appearance of lax tissue in double chins.

“Turkey Neck” and Lax, Loose Skin

Loose or “lax” skin  has lost its firmness, tightness or elasticity.  When the skin on the chin becomes loose, it is unfortunately sometimes called a “turkey neck.”

There are several causes of skin laxity. The first is simply aging or getting older. When we age our skin produces less collagen and elastin – causing the fibril layers to loosen. As a result the skin starts to become thinner – which results in sagging.

“Photo aging” – which is damage to the skins from exposure to sun, smoking, air pollution,etc. – also causes skin to become lax. Similarly, diets that are poor in minerals and vitamins can contribute to skin laxity, because of the lack of antioxidants needed to regenerate the skin.

And while a large or sudden weight loss can result in less fat – it can also cause loose or sagging skin. Finally, some loose or sagging skin – especially lax double chin skin – may simply be hereditary.
