New Botox Alternatives Available Soon
Most people use the term Botox to refer to any facial injection that temporarily “freezes” wrinkles in the face – but Botox is actually the brand name of one of several products on the market that all contain the same active ingredient “Botulinum Type A”.
In this article we discuss the two current Botox alternatives on the market – Dysport & Xeomin – and reveal the new similar products that will be available in the next year or so.
The History of Botox
Botox was actually the first botulinum approved for use in the US by the FDA in 2002, to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe frown lines between the eyebrows.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 7.4 million botulinum toxin type A injections were done in 2018 – and those numbers are anticipated to continue to climb. So, not only is the need for injectables increasing, but so is the development of new and novel formulas.
Current Alternatives to Botox
It wasn’t until seven years after Botox was FDA approved that another Botulinum Type A, Dysport, was cleared for the same purpose in 2009. Then in 2011 the 3rd Botox alternative, Xeomin, was FDA approved. And while all 3 brands work on reducing wrinkles, there are some significant differences between the three brands.
Dysport works the fastest, peaking sooner, with patients feeling its effects within 1 -2 days. However, this is not necessarily a good thing, as a more gradual onset is more comfortable than a sudden “freezing”. Xeomin has the most gradual onset, which means the “freeze” comes on the most gently – but you have to wait longer to see results.
All 3 brands reach their maximal effects in 2-3 weeks, and all three also generally work faster in women than in men. You can read more about Dysport & Xeomin HERE.
Upcoming Alternatives to Botox
DAXI by Revance
In the next few years, new Botox alternatives are expected to be released. The first is DAXI. Revance is developing DAXI, a novel botulinum A toxin for glabellar (forehead) wrinkles that is not yet licensed in the United States or any other nation. What distinguishes this toxin from Botox and the others is that studies have shown that the duration of action at the injected dosage is greater than that of currently available botulinum toxins.
DAXI is a next-generation neuromodulator that is scheduled to debut following approval by the FDA, possibly later in 2021 or early 2021. DAXI is the first and only neuromodulator product that uses a highly purified botulinum toxin that is free of human or animal components.
DAXI also increases the length of the results from 12–16 weeks to an average of 24 weeks which is rather impressive!
BONTI by Allergan
Allergan is currently developing a new Botox alternative called Bonti. This product is unique in that it works much faster than other Botox-like products. But, somewhat surprisingly, it is designed to only last two to four weeks!
Because it has rapid beginning of action within 24 hours but rapidly wears off in two to four weeks it is actually a temporary neurotoxin. It is supposed to be an excellent choice for first-timers looking to experience a Botox-type treatment. It is also going to be marketed to those in need of a quick touch-up before a major event.
Anticipated uses of Botox are weddings, galas, red carpet events and even class reunions – for men and women who want to rapidly appear younger and more refreshed, without long-term results!
