What’s Better for “Quarantine 15” Fat Loss: CoolSculpting or Liposuction?
Many of our patients in the Bloomfield Hills area have noticed that they’ve gained a few (or ten!) extra pounds during the pandemic. More time snacking in front of the TV, the sedentary lifestyle of working from home, and the stress brought on by Covid-19 have all contributed to weight and fat gain in many of our patients. A frequent question we are now receiving at our Bloomfield Hills area Med Spa is “What’s better for fat loss: CoolSculpting or Liposuction?
CoolSculpting and Liposuction are both effective, well-known procedures to remove fat, and Dr. Ali offers both at his Bloomfield Hills area surgical practice and Med Spa. Both treatments have pros and cons!
The following information discusses these facts to help you identify which procedure is best for you. However, the optimal way to make your decision about fat removal is to have a private, consultation to assess your body, discuss your fat loss goals, and answer all your questions. Once you’re informed about your options by Dr. Ali, you’ll be able to make an educated decision.
Fat Loss with Liposuction
Liposuction is typically performed by Dr. Ali under local anesthetic. A liposuction patient can be, but isn’t usually “put under”. Lipo is a minimally- invasive, surgical procedure in which unwanted fat is literally sucked-out of an area of the body. Using small incisions, a tube or “cannula” is inserted into the target area and the fat is dislodged and vacuumed out of the body.
Liposuction usually only requires one procedure per area to reach the fat loss goal. Because of the semi-invasive nature of liposuction, there is usually 2 to 7 days of downtime before resuming normal activities. While some discomfort may last for a couple weeks after liposuction, it is usually well managed with prescription pain medication at first, and then the patient can gradually move to over-the-counter pain medication like Tylenol or ibuprofen.
Every patient heals differently. In addition to some bruising, after Liposuction, a patient can expect the swelling for up to 3 to 6 weeks. Since the fat was sucked out, the full results of liposuction will be visible once swelling is gone. Only one treatment is needed, and the fat loss is permanent. Fat cells can never “grow back” – so the fat will not return in the treated area..
Fat Loss with CoolSculpting
CoolSculpting is a non-surgical, non-invasive procedure that literally freezes fat from targeted areas of the body. There are no needles, no anesthesia and no incisions. And amazingly, there is no downtime to work around. Patients can return to their normal activities immediately. Many people go back to work right after having completed their treatment.
CoolSculpting works by freezing fat – then over time, eliminating the destroyed cells through the body’s natural processes. Whereas, Liposuction removes the fat immediately during the procedure.
Results from CoolSculpting will begin to be visible in 2 to 4 weeks after the procedure. Greater results will be visible after 2 months. The complete result of a CoolSculpting treatment can take from 3 to 5 months. However, unlike the surgical procedure of Liposuction, there is no discomfort or swelling with CoolSculpting.
Since each CoolSculpting treatment removes 20 to 25 percent of fat cells in the targeted area, it is possible that more than one treatment is necessary to obtain the desired results. Whereas Liposuction will suck out all fat cells during the single surgical process.
Because CoolSculpting is non-invasive and non-surgical, requiring no anesthesia or downtime, it is much also less expensive than Liposuction.
CoolSculpting and Liposuction Similarities
CoolSculpting and Liposuction both target fat cells that are unaffected by diet and exercise. Both procedures are not a solution to help with obesity. Tightening up excessive loose skin and muscles in the abdomen are not an issue that either of these treatments can fix. However, CoolSculpting does help tighten abdominal skin to some degree, while liposuction does not.
The most appealing benefit that both CoolSculpting and Liposuction offer is that the fat will be removed permanently. Fat cells are gone and will never return!
Differences of CoolSculpting & Liposuction
Liposuction usually only requires one single treatment while CoolSculpting can require multiple treatments. Liposuction can also safely remove up to eleven pounds of fat in a single treatment.
However, CoolSculpting is non-invasive, is not painful, has no downtime, and is much cheaper compared to liposuction.
For these reasons, some patients at our Bloomfield Hills, MI area Med Spa prefer CoolSculpting as the better fat loss treatment, while others may choose liposuction.
